This weekend, the IMSA-sanctioned Ford Mustang Challenge held its first event at famed Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and Tyler Maxson had a successful first outing in the new series driving for Robert Noaker Racing. Finishing in the top-ten on Saturday, Maxson stood atop the podium on Sunday earning his first win of the season.

Maxson was on the pace right away in his #74 Ford Mustang Dark Horse R. He was second quickest in practice and was only one of two drivers to dip below the one-minute, thirty-one-second mark. In the first qualifying session of the Mustang Challenge season, Maxson qualified on pole in the Dark Horse class for race one.

“It’s great to be the first driver to claim a Mustang Challenge Dark Horse class pole, but it’s important to capitalize on our starting position,” Maxson explained following qualifying. “We’ve shown we have a fast car, now we just have to get the win.”

In race one, Maxson was running well before an early caution, and an eventual restart saw a mistake that sent him through the gravel trap as he dropped the running order outside the top-20. Never giving up, Maxson battled his way back forward, ultimately crossing under the checkered flag in sixth place in class. Setting the fastest lap of the race, Maxson was pushed back to seventh after a post-race penalty.

“It was unfortunate that we had to fight back through the field, as we had the pace for more than that,” Maxson added after race one. “But I’m happy that we could fight back up to sixth, and a huge congratulations to my teammate Robert for the win.”

Starting from pole in race two Sunday morning, Maxson fended off teammate Robert Noaker to take the checkered flag and grab his first win of the season after falling back to third, and moving back to the point before the mid-race distance.

“It felt great to be back on the podium’s top step, and it was fun to battle with Robert throughout the race,” Maxson said. “Overall, it was a great weekend, and I can’t wait to race again at Watkins Glen.”

Maxson will return to the Ford Mustang Challenge with Robert Noaker Racing June 20-23 at Watkins Glen International.
