Tyler Maxson and TOPP Racing left Road America with the championship lead intact after a dramatic three-race weekend during the fifth event weekend of the 2026 Porsche Carrera Cup North America season. Competing as part of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship weekend at the 4.048-mile, 14-turn Wisconsin circuit, Maxson earned a pole position and victory in an otherwise challenging weekend.
Maxson opened the weekend in dominant fashion, qualifying on pole position for race one and leading the field to the checkered flag for the victory. The win added to his season total and helped maintain his point lead atop the Pro class championship standings.
Race two ended abruptly for Maxson after contact on the start forced him to pit lane and an early retirement, cutting short what had been a strong weekend up to that point. Proving the incident was no fault of his own, the driver forcing the issue on the opening lap was penalized post-race and dropped down the finishing order.
The third and final on-track wheel-to-wheel action of the weekend came Saturday in the makeup race for Miami’s cancelled race two. Wet weather moved into the area overnight, leaving a rain-soaked track for the race, and Maxson brought the car home in seventh position when the checkered flag flew and left Road America with a 16-point advantage in the championship standings.
“I guess it is good when you leave an event and are upset after qualifying first and winning a race,” explained Maxson. “I think we had a good opportunity to win all three races at Road America but some over aggressive moves by others forced the issue in race two and weather hampered a drive to the front in the Miami makeup race. In the end, the TOPP Racing crew provided me with another fast racecar, we added to our season long win total, and left Wisconsin with the point lead and three event weekends to go.”
Despite the minor setback, Maxson and TOPP Racing leave Road America with the championship lead, thanks to the race one victory and the points collected in Saturday’s rain-affected makeup race. The team now turns its attention to the next round of the 2026 Porsche Carrera Cup North America season at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway in September before closing the season at Road Atlanta, Maxson’s home track, and the Circuit of the Americas.
