Tyler Maxson made a major statement in his Porsche Carrera Cup North America campaign this past weekend at Watkins Glen International Raceway. Securing his second career podium in the series with a second-place finish in race two of the doubleheader, Maxson is becoming more and more comfortable with his TOPP Racing prepared Porsche as he continues his rookie campaign.
After qualifying fourth for race one, Maxson delivered a consistent performance in his #77 TOPP Racing Porsche, finishing fifth on Saturday. But it was Sunday’s race two where the young talent truly stood out. Battling up the order from a fourth-place start, Maxson executed a decisive pass on teammate Ryan Yardley to move into second and held strong through the final laps to cross the line just behind the leader, marking a career-best finish in Porsche Carrera Cup North America competition.
“Getting that second podium is incredible,” expressed Maxson. “The pace has been there all season, and the team has been giving me a great car every weekend, but qualifying has ultimately been our downfall and put me behind early in the weekend. It was just about putting it all together. Watkins Glen is such a historic and technical track, and to stand on the podium here is really special. I’m excited to keep this momentum rolling into Road America.”
TOPP Racing Team Owner Todd Oppermann added, “We’ve known from the start that Tyler had the pace and the race craft to compete at the front in this series. To see him put it all together and land on the podium is a huge milestone, not just for him, but for the whole team. He’s been methodical in his development, and this result at Watkins Glen is just the beginning of what he’s capable of.”
With the result, Maxson continues to rise in the championship standings, showing steady progress and consistent speed in his first full season with TOPP Racing in the ultra-competitive Porsche Carrera Cup series. Maxson’s next event will take place at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, July 31st through August 2nd for races nine and ten of the 2025 season. Fans can follow the action live on IMSA.com/tvlive and Peacock TV.
