Set to take on the opening event of the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Challenge Presented by BF Goodrich Tires this weekend, St. Cloud, Florida’s Tyler Gonzalez is en route to Austin, Texas. Ready to compete at the famed Circuit of the Americas (COTA) facility, Gonzalez will look to put preseason race experience and testing knowledge to good use in his series debut with Copeland Motorsports.
“I am extremely excited about competing at COTA as not many people get to even visit here, let alone race here,” explained Gonzalez. “I feel very confident in my transition from karts to cars, and I know I am with the team to beat in the series. I am nursing a minor injury but should be good to go when the first session hits the track on Friday morning.”
As a multi-time karting champion, Gonzalez enters the series with testing and race events under his belt as he now joins forces with Copeland Motorsports. Looking to take advantage of their elite program that features both rookies and veteran drivers, the talented 15-year-old is ready to challenge for race wins, podium results and Rookie of the Year honors in 2019.
Gonzalez continued, “This is the next step for me and my racing. I will work hard, represent my partners the best I can as well as strive for the best results possible. It is going to be a busy weekend in Texas but I am ready.”
“We have a pair of fast rookies in our program and I believe that they will push each other to perform better each race,” explained Team Owner Dean Copeland. “Put Tyler’s drive with the experience of others in the program, and I think we have a very potent program.”
With practice set to take place on Friday, official competition will begin on Saturday with qualifying and the first wheel-to-wheel action. Sunday will be the home of race two on the weekend, as Gonzalez and Copeland Motorsports will look to double down in Texas.
