Like he has on a few occasions so far in 2022, Tyler Gonzalez will compete in a pair of racing divisions on the same weekend. Set to take on the 3.37-mile, 11-turn, Watkins Glen International Raceway, Tyler Gonzalez will compete in both the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge programs. Piloting a Copeland Motorsports prepared MX-5 Cup entry in one effort, the Floridian will enter the Michelin Pilot Challenge with Van Der Steur Racing as he co-drives with Rory Van Der Steur.
As a winner in the Mazda MX-5 Cup program this year and fresh off a podium result in the Michelin Pilot Challenge, Gonzalez is looking to continue his momentum in New York.
“I really enjoy Watkins Glen, and I had great pace when I raced there last season,” expressed Gonzalez. “I really think we can leave the weekend with three podium results and some massive points towards the overall championship points battle.”
Despite a win at the opening round of the Mazda MX-5 Cup in Daytona back in January, Gonzalez has endured some bad luck which sees him ninth in the points chase. In the Michelin Pilot Challenge, Gonzalez and Van Der Steur have been a model of consistency and have methodically moved their way into the third position as they look to take the battle to the factory level efforts this weekend as they climb back behind the wheel of a Hyundai Veloster N TCR.
Gonzalez added, “We have our goals set high and will look to achieve them beginning with our very first session on Thursday morning.”
With a jam packed schedule that will see Tyler Gonzalez hit the track on Thursday morning, he will commence his efforts for the top step of the podium on Friday afternoon with the first MX-5 Cup race. Saturday will be the home of the second Mazda race of the weekend before the two-hour Michelin Pilot Challenge race on Saturday afternoon.
