This past weekend, the Pirelli GT4 America program held its first two rounds at the famed Sonoma Raceway, and Tyler Gonzalez had a strong first outing with his new team Smooge Racing. Driving alongside John Geesbreght, the pair earned the victory during race one on Saturday and backed that up with a top-five finish on Sunday during race two.

Running on Friday was canceled due to issues with the track surface, but in practice two — which also served as qualifying for race one — on Saturday, Gonzalez and John Geesbreght were straight on pace, setting the third-quickest time in the Silver Class in their #68 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Supra GT4 EVO.

In race one, Geesbreght started the wheel-to-wheel race when the green flag flew and handed the controls to Gonzalez at the midrace point. Gonzalez emerged in the lead after pit stops but had to fend off attacks from multiple cars behind. He successfully did so, claiming both the Silver Class win and the overall race victory.

“It was a great race, and it feels great to get my first win in the Pirelli GT4 America series,” expressed Gonzalez. “John drove a solid stint and put us in a great position, and once we were in the lead, it was just about staying there and not making any mistakes.”

Race two was another solid race for Gonzalez and the #68 machine. For his stint, Gonzalez was fighting at the front end of the field, and ultimately the Smooge Racing duo of Gonzalez and Geesbreght came home fourth in class.

“Overall, it was a strong weekend for us, with two top-five finishes and one of those being a win and a podium,” added Gonzalez. “A huge thanks to John and everyone at Smooge Racing for a great first weekend to the 2024 season.”

Rounds three and four of Pirelli GT4 America will take place at Sebring International Raceway May 3–5 but first, Gonzalez turns his attention back to the Trans Am Series Presented by Pirelli at NOLA Motorsports Park this coming weekend.
