Progressing his way through the karting ranks, Floridian Tyler Gonzalez is set to make his move to the car racing world. After testing and competing in local Florida regional events in the latter part of the 2018 season, Gonzalez has joined Stevensville, Maryland’s powerhouse Copeland Motorsports operation for the 2019 Mazda Global MX-5 Cup.
“The move to cars has been a learning experience. New people, new equipment, new series, new tracks and more have made me really work hard,” explained Gonzalez. “The MX-5 Cup car is like a big go kart and my driving style works well with the car. I can’t wait to get the 2019 season started.”
Copeland Motorsports is a full service prep shop and race team with extensive capabilities. Competing in the Mazda Global MX-5 Cup as well as the Pirelli World Challenge TCR and TCA divisions, their 2018 driver lineup included Jarrett Andretti, Bryan Ortiz and Racer Kashima. Their trackside support and driver development program can guide you from high performance driving events to championship winning racing. From inception to the design, engineering, fabrication and development, Copeland Motorsports can perfect your project.
Gonzalez, who has his eyes set solely on the series championship and $200,000 Mazda Career Advancement Scholarship added, “Copeland Motorsports and the MX-5 Cup program is a great training platform for me and will allow me to gain much needed experience in my move to cars. Also, I will be able to compete alongside professional series such as IndyCar, Road to Indy and the Pirelli World Challenge at some of North America’s best race tracks.”
Closing out 2018, Gonzalez will be seen in Las Vegas at the remaining two major events on this season’s karting calendar. Joining Team BENIK and taking part in the ROK Cup Promotions ROK the RIO as well as the Superkarts! USA (SKUSA) SuperNationals, Gonzalez will look to end his year on a high before shifting focus to his 2019 race programs.
