Banking off of a very successful start to the 2023 Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich season, veteran driver Tyler Gonzalez hopes to carry momentum from his win and two podium finishes at the Daytona Internartional Speedway into rounds three and four on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida this weekend.

After a couple of tough finishes in St. Petersburg last year, Gonzalez is eager to bring home a good result for his team, Copeland Motorsports, as the pair currently sit first place in both the Team and Driver Championship standings.

“We’ve got a lot to prove coming back to St. Pete this year,” explained Gonzalez, “And after a successful first outing in Daytona, I think we’ve shown that we’re a serious contender this year. We’re the smallest of the bigger teams in the paddock but we’re definitely not the smallest on track. We are leading in both Driver and Team Championship standings right now so it’s important we continue to gain those points early on in the season.”

The St. Petersburg temporary course, which began assembly on February 9th, is comprised of 1.8 miles of St. Petersburg’s downtown streets along the Gulf of Mexico with 14 turns and beautiful views of both the city and the ocean. Tyler and Copeland Motorsports will share the barrier-lined circuit this weekend alongside other prominent series like the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, the FIRESTONE INDY NXT SERIES and the ladder of the USF Pro Championships series.

The second Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup race weekend of the year will begin on Friday with a pair of practice sessions followed by the only qualifying of the weekend determining race one’s starting lineup. Saturday morning will see the green flag fly for race one as the first event on track for the day with race two to follow late in the afternoon.
