Looking to make fireworks on the Fourth of July weekend, TJ Speed traveled to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for Rounds 13 and 14 of the USF Pro 2000 Presented by Continental Tire program. With two rookie drivers, Liam Sceats, Cooper Becklin and the TJ Speed outfit were hoping for big things in the Buckeye State.

With a test day on Thursday hampered by rain, Friday was the home of official practice and qualifying, with both wheel-to-wheel races taking place on Saturday.

Qualifying could have been better for TJ Speed Motorsports as disappointing results motivated the driving duo to improve throughout the rest of the weekend. After Sceats scored the 13th fastest time and Becklin was mired back in 20th, the focus shifted to race one of the weekend and the chance to move forward.

“Both Liam and Cooper did very well in the race,” explained TJ Speed’s Tim Neff. “Starting that deep in the field is challenging as they are racing drivers they do not usually run with, which leaves the exposure for contact quite high.”

Starting in row seven and ten, Sceats and Becklin had a good race, staying out of trouble, but could not advance far forward. With Mid-Ohio notoriously tricky to pass, Sceats ended his 30-lap race in 14th, while Becklin followed close behind in P15. With lap times from race one setting the grid for race two, both drivers would give themselves a better chance in the second wheel-to-wheel race with better track position, starting ninth and 12th.

Rolling off the grid Saturday afternoon for the second wheel-to-wheel race of the weekend, Sceats and Becklin aimed to better their race one performance. Becklin scored the squad’s best result, finishing just outside the top-ten in P12, while Sceats was caught up in a lap four incident and forced to retire.

Neff continued, “It was not the weekend we were looking for, but we will regroup and go at it again in Toronto, where I am confident we can fight for podium results.”

Next up for TJ Speed will be a trip to Canada and a double-header weekend on the Streets of Toronto. Taking place over the July 19-21 weekend, TJ Speed will enter Liam Sceats and Cooper Becklin in the penultimate event weekend of 2024.
