Continuing to progress through the 2023 race season, the teenage duo of Tyler Maxson and Tyler Gonzalez will be back on track this weekend at the fast and flowing Virginia International Raceway (VIR). While Maxson will compete alongside Gonzalez in the Pirelli GT4 America program, Gonzalez will also look to continue to stretch his point lead in the Toyota GR Cup North America series.
“We have had a good start to the season and while we have had some setbacks on race weekends, we also seem to find our way back into the top-five and in contention,” explained Maxson. “We have come to grips with our Toyota Supra and the Copeland Motorsports crew has done a fantastic job giving us a great car. VIR is a track that I have had success at, and I think it could be the site of our first victory.”
Gonzalez added, “We have been pushing hard on the track, and the guys at the shop have been doing the same. It is always tough to take a brand-new car and make it win right away, but we are determined to make that happen this season.”
The Maxson and Gonzalez duo is one of the youngest in the Pirelli GT4 American program and though they lack age, they are high on experience. Moving through the karting ranks together and into sportscar racing, the pair co-drove in 2020 before going their own ways in 2022. 2023 saw them back together at Copeland Motorsports, the program they both moved into cars with a few years ago.
Maxson continued, “We have a similar driving style and are both aggressive when we need to be, but smart when we must. It is a good combination for us, and I know it works well for the team.”
While the pair will battle in GT4 machinery together, Gonzalez will also take on the Toyota GR Cup North America program where he is a multi-time race winner and current point leader. Looking to add to his championship total this weekend, the increase in track time allows for him to better understand track evolution as the weekend goes on.
“The goal remains the same this weekend as it does every other weekend, win,” explained Gonzalez. “We have performed well but need to keep our foot on the gas.”
