It was a trip to Road America and the famed 4.048-mile, 14-turn facility for rounds nine and ten in the inaugural Toyota GR Cup North America program. Competing out of the BSI Racing stable, Steven Clemons Jr. improved from his qualifying efforts in both wheel-to-wheel races as both team and driver continued to gain experience and knowledge in one of North America’s newest racing series.
“The series continues to grow in depth as teams and drivers learn more about the cars and find the speed needed to compete inside the top-ten,” explained BSI Racing’s Shea Holbrook. “We continue to do the same but as a single-car effort, it is tough. It was great to see Steven continue his forward progression as he was able to gain positions from qualifying to the end of the race on both occasions.”
After a practice day on Friday, Saturday opened with race one qualifying where Clemons Jr. clocked the 13th fastest lap of the session. Lining up for the first wheel-to-wheel action from the inside of row seven, the driver of the pink #76 BSI Racing entry gained two positions over the 17-lap affair to cross the stripe in 11th.
Sunday saw a similar qualifying performance, this time in P14, and took the green for race two from the outside of row seven. Looking to improve on his starting position and keep the trend alive, Clemons did just that closing the weekend in the 11th spot.
“It wasn’t our best results weekend of the season, but it was a learning one for sure,” explained Clemons Jr. “The longer the track, the more drafting opportunities and the tougher it is. While we struggled slightly with speed, there are a ton of positives that we can take from this event into the next one in Florida.”
With a few weeks off, BSI Racing, Steven Clemons Jr., and the rest of the Toyota GR Cup North America program will return to the track September 22-24 at the Sebring International Raceway in Sebring, Florida.
