Joining Copeland Motorsports late in the 2021 season and taking part in an extensive test program, Max Opalski is now set to take on his first ever street race in the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich. Racing at the Daytona International Speedway for the first two wheel-to-wheel races of 2022, Opalski will now take on the barrier lined circuit at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg as he completes alongside the NTT INDYCAR Series.
“My first Mazda MX-5 Cup event was decent, and I definitely was able to get all the nerves out of the way for the rest of the season,” explained the Copeland Motorsports rookie. “My series debut went well as I was able to run inside the top-ten on a damp yet drying track and come home with an eighth-place finish. Looking for more in race two, I was unfortunately hit from behind in turn three and forced to retire from the race. The early exit has only made me hungrier to get back on track and continue the progress towards success.”
Making the move from karts to cars and entrusting in Copeland Motorsports to aid in that transition, Max Opalski has also begun to learn the task of dealing with partners and the media, alongside learning and racing at never seen tracks.
Opalski added, “It is a new experience for me. Competing at the national level in karting was a great training ground but looking at the schedule and seeing tracks such as Daytona, Road America, and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car course as well as events like St. Pete is exciting. I am thankful to have the opportunity as well as the support from many including Copeland Motorsports, my partners and my family.”
