Tyler Maxson earned his second career Porsche Carrera Cup North America win at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta in the penultimate round of the season. Along with the victory, Maxson strengthened his position in the Rookie of the Year and championship standings by earning key points in both Race One and Race Two.
On Thursday, Maxson qualified third for both races with his fastest and second-fastest lap times of the one and only qualifying session. Later that day, he charged forward in Race One, maneuvering his #77 TOPP Racing Porsche to challenge for the lead. With some elbows-out racing, Maxson overtook the leader and pulled away from the field. Crossing the line first, the TOPP Racing driver secured his second career win in Porsche Carrera Cup North America. He was joined on the podium by teammate Cole Kleck, who finished third.
Friday’s Race Two delivered more intensity and excitement. With the Rookie of the Year battle still open, Maxson was determined to capitalize on every point available. After holding third place for most of the race, a last-lap mix-up shuffled him to fifth. Despite missing the podium, Maxson earned crucial points for both him and the team.
“The car felt great all three days, so a big thanks to the team,” said Maxson. “It was great to get that win and reward everyone for their hard work. Sharing the podium with my teammate was great, so congratulations to him and the team. Although Friday didn’t go exactly our way, we built great momentum this week that we’ll carry into the season finale at Circuit of the Americas.”
TOPP Racing Team Owner Todd Oppermann added, “Tyler was determined this week and worked incredibly hard to maximize his opportunities on track. We’re confident in more success as we head into the final round of the season in Texas.”
Maxson will look to finish the season strong at the Porsche Carrera Cup North America finale this weekend, October 17–19, at the Circuit of the Americas. Running alongside the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, the main event of the weekend, Maxson will pilot his TOPP Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car around the 3.41-mile, 20-turn road course just outside Austin, Texas. The championship and Rookie of the Year titles will both be decided at the event.
The action begins on Friday with the only practice session of the weekend at 2:35 PM CT. Qualifying takes place on Saturday at 9:45 AM CT, followed by Race One at 2:40 PM CT.
