With eight consecutive wins under his belt, Tyler Maxson went into this past weekend undefeated in 2020 and as the TC America TCR championship leader. Looking to continue his winning streak, Maxson headed to Road America to begin the second half of the 2020 season for rounds nine, ten and eleven at the picturesque Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin facility.
In the two practice sessions, Maxson finished fifth and fourth, but had to make some changes for the upcoming qualifying session and race the next day. On Friday morning under wet conditions, the teenager was able to once again claim the pole position for race one. As the skies cleared and the track began to dry, Maxson prepared for the first race of the weekend and after initially falling back to third during the first lap, managed to reclaim the lead with thirty minutes left in the race and earned his ninth straight win – remaining undefeated in 2020.
In the second race, Maxson sustained his first defeat after suffering from mechanical issues early on in the session and was forced to retire from the race. With a broken shock forcing his retirement, it was the first opportunity for another TCR competitor to stand atop the podium as all Maxson could do was watch.
Eager to claim his tenth win, and advance his championship lead, Maxson focused in on the final race of the weekend on Sunday. After an early red flag and a restart, he finished just shy of the podium in fourth.
“It was a difficult weekend with the BOP changes, but we still managed to gain valuable points,” expressed Maxson. “We now shift our focus to the next one and look to start a new streak atop the podium.”
While Maxson’s winning streak came to an end this past weekend, he still managed to walk away with a win, valuable championship points and was able to maintain his championship lead. With only two event weekends remaining, Maxson will be fighting to end the season strong, earning additional wins and, hopefully, the 2020 TC America TCR Championship.
In two weeks, Maxson will return with Copeland Motorsports in his Hyundai Veloster N TCR for rounds 12-14 at Circuit of the Americas.
