With the motorsports world on hold for nearly three months due to COVID-19, drivers from around the world were forced to reevaluate their 2020 race plans and evolve with the fluidity of the ever changing event calendar. Missing a bulk of the busiest part of the karting season, Texan Luke Lange and his team looked elsewhere to see how they could turn a delay in karting to a positive move for the future. Finalizing a deal last week and after topping the podium blocks at the prestigious June Sprints at Road America, and announced by Copeland Motorsports this morning, Luke Lange will move from karting to compete with Copeland Motorsports in TC America for the remainder of 2020 behind the wheel of a Hyundai Veloster N.
“I love karting and it has brought me to where I am today, but after my first session in a car, I knew I was ready to make the move,” explained Lange, the newest Copeland Motorsports driver. “I can’t thank everyone in karting that has helped me get to this point especially Mike and Alex Speed and everyone at Speed Concepts Racing for the past few years. They take a different approach to karting and really helped me learn and understand how to be successful and for that, I am thankful.”
In his first race, Lange was looking to gain experience and learn the track for an event later this season. Piloting a Hyundai Veloster N, the 15-year-old was able to win the prestigious June Sprints at one of North America’s most coveted racing venues, Road America, in his first attempt.
Lange added, “It was a great weekend. I learned a ton but still have a lot of knowledge to gain. It is always good to go out and win your first event but that just makes me hungrier for more. Heading home on Sunday, I was already counting down the days until the next on track action.”
Progressing from the top tiers of karting, Luke Lange enters the sportscar world with quite a story. Only 16-years-old, Lange is a cancer survivor, raised millions of dollars for cancer research and has a foundation, LukesFastbreaks.org, which supports children, adolescents and young adults that have been diagnosed with cancer.
Set to make his TC America debut over the July 9th to 12th weekend at the VIRginia International Raceway (VIR), Lange recently gained some on track experiences at the venue during a two-day test.
Lange continued, “I had a good test at VIR and am hoping that I can continue to bat a thousand and keep my win percentage at 100!”
