It was a busy and successful weekend for JTR Motorsports as the team competed in both the Whelen Mazda MX-5 Cup season finale and the penultimate Porsche Carrera Cup North America round at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta. With strong performances across both programs, JTR closed out one season on a high and gained valuable points heading into the Porsche finale later this month.
In the Mazda MX-5 Cup, the team’s five-car lineup of Jared Thomas, Justin Gravett, Peter Atwater, Sally Mott, and Woody Heimann delivered an impressive final weekend of the season. Gravett qualified tenth with Atwater close behind in 12th, while Mott, Heimann, and Thomas rounded out the lineup in 17th, 22nd, and the back of the field, respectively, after Thomas was forced to sit out most of the qualifying session due to an early incident.
Despite starting last, Thomas stormed through the field in race one, climbing to a near podium finish in fourth place. Gravett joined him in the top-ten, finishing seventh, with Mott delivering a P12 result. Heimann crossed under the checkered flag in 15th, with Atwater in 17th. In race two, Thomas once again fought his way to the front to finish sixth, with Mott 13th, Gravett 15th, Atwater 16th, and Heimann 17th.
The strong collective effort secured JTR Motorsports a fifth-place finish in the Team Championship standings, while Jared Thomas concluded the season fourth overall in the Drivers’ Championship. Additionally, Sally Mott capped off her impressive sophomore campaign as the highest-finishing female driver, finishing 12th overall in the season-long points battle.
In the Porsche Carrera Cup North America, Jared Thomas, Rob Walker, and Peter Atwater carried the team’s momentum into a strong weekend showing. Thomas qualified seventh overall in the Pro class, while Walker and Atwater started fourth and seventh in the Masters class, respectively.
In Race One, Thomas finished just shy of the podium in fourth, while Walker claimed a third-place podium finish in class, and Atwater followed in seventh. In race two, Thomas brought home eighth on the results sheet, as Walker once again impressed with another third-place finish, and Atwater improved to sixth in the Masters class.
“Road Atlanta has always been one of our favorite tracks, and it was awesome to have such a strong showing in both the MX-5 Cup and Carrera Cup programs,” explained Dave Thomas, JTR Motorsports Team Owner. “Everyone on the team worked incredibly hard all weekend, and it’s rewarding to see that effort reflected in our results. We’re heading into the finale at the Circuit of the Americas with great momentum and confidence.”
With one championship season now complete, JTR Motorsports will shift focus to the Porsche Carrera Cup North America season finale at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), held alongside the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, October 17–19. The team will once again field Thomas, Walker, and Atwater in their respective classes.
The weekend will begin on Friday with a single practice session, followed by qualifying and race one on Saturday, and the final race of the 2025 season on Sunday. Fans can tune in live on the Porsche Motorsport North America YouTube page.
