Hunter Yeany continues to impress everyone with his speed and skill. The Velocity Racing Development (VRD) standout claimed his fourth and fifth win of the season and backed them up with a second-place podium finish this past weekend at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. With five wins in nine events, Yeany extended his championship points lead as the season crosses over the halfway mark.
“Hunter did a fantastic job. He’s on a steep learning curve and must improve in many areas to ensure a shot at the 2020 championship,” states Dan Mitchell, Velocity Racing Development Team Manager. “Right now, he is delivering and that’s why he has five wins and eight podiums, but the podium streak was broken on Saturday, and we have to ensure that doesn’t happen again.”
Race number one was filled with yellow flag after yellow flag allowing the field little opportunity to gain space between one another. Yeany, starting in the fourth position, eagerly crept his way up to the top-three on track and took advantage of a fellow driver’s mistake to move into the top position with only two circuits remaining.
“It was a pretty tough race,” explained Hunter. “I just managed to get around the outside of a few people right before the finish. I want to thank my team for giving me a fast car, my sponsors for supporting me, and my family for being here every step of the way.”
Race number four on the weekend gave Yeany a comfortable victory as he started on the pole position and led the field for a flag-to-flag victory. Stating his goal before the season started, Yeany is well on the way to gathering the most wins of any competitor in 2020 in his quest for the series title.
Even though Yeany won race one and race four at Barber Motorsports Park, it was race number three that was the talk of the weekend and will most likely be remembered for the rest of the season as one of the most competitive head to head challenges we will see this year. Starting in second, Yeany fought hard for the lead throughout the whole race landing him in second place, a scant .041 of a second shy of first place, one of the closest finishes we have seen this season.
Now that the first half of the season is over, Yeany will use this seven-week break between rounds to take a well-deserved rest at home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. His next on track appearance will be at Sebring International Raceway September 25th through the 27th as he will surely look to continue his winning ways when the series resumes action in Florida.
