Making their way through a season of novelty, transformation and growth, HMD Motorsports is looking to finish their 2019 campaign on top. Throughout the entire Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires season, the ever-changing team has experienced a multitude of highs and lows. Now that all of the pieces are coming together and the team is continuing to develop a pattern of improving performance, they are ready to take on the final two rounds of the championship this weekend, September 20-22 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
Heading back to the West Coast for the final two rounds of the championship, HMD Motorsports drivers David Malukas and Toby Sowery will take on the 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course situated between Salinas and Monterey, California. As a track that is new to both rookie drivers, they will experience a massive elevation change as well as the famous Corkscrew.
“I am super excited to be going to Laguna Seca,” said David Malukas. “This will be my first opportunity to race there, and I just feel so fortunate to be going to a track with such a notable history. Laguna Seca is definitely a track with a big name and many of the drivers who I look up to have competed there over the years.”
Last month at Portland, Malukas certainly did not have the weekend he was hoping for, finishing sixth and eighth in the two races respectively. Currently sitting sixth in the championship points standings, Malukas has two more chances to finish the season strong.
“Going into the offseason, I definitely want to end on a high note,” the two-time 2019 podium winner and rookie driver continued. “I want to look back at this season positively and be able to take all of the experiences it has thrown at me to improve and grow as a driver.”
Still riding a high from his first career Road to Indy win in Portland, Toby Sowery is primed and ready for his first trip to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca as he looks to secure the third position in the series championship points battle.
“I am excited to finish the season off at such an iconic track,” added Sowery. “It will be an exciting weekend, especially after carrying the momentum from Portland. I know the team have put a lot of effort in these last couple of months, and they deserve two solid results from both myself and David.”
HMD Motorsports has shown steady progression as they have advanced through each and every weekend this season, finishing on the podium the past four event weekends. Looking to continue that momentum, HMD Motorsports will be looking to place drivers on the podium in both races of the weekend. After recently announcing an expansion into the entire Road to Indy ladder program, HMD Motorsports is the first team to compete in all three rungs – paving the way for a very exciting 2020 season!
