Sitting tenth in the Battery Tender Global MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich Championship points standings, St. Cloud, Florida resident Tyler Gonzalez is back to Road America this weekend. Taking on the pristine 4.014-mile Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin facility, Gonzalez is part of a five driver Copeland Motorsports squad that will be aiming for the top step of the podium.
“Road America could be the best track that I have competed at since I made the move to car racing,” explained Gonzalez, who competed in the SCCA June Sprints this past weekend. “It is fast and flowing and the high speed corners force you to keep the highest momentum possible. A tenth lost in a corner could be half a second by the time you get to the next one.”
With several top-ten results to date this season and a pair of Hard Charger awards, Gonzalez’s goals of race wins and podium results have yet to be achieved.
“I have learned a ton and have been just as quick as my teammates,” added Gonzalez. “I have been behind on qualifying and it really effects my race results in the end. If I qualifying 15th and finish eighth, what would happen if I qualified eighth? I am looking to turn that around this weekend as it has been a major focus of mine in the time off that we have had.”
Taking to the track on Thursday for a pair of practice sessions, Tyler Gonzalez will head straight into qualifying and race one of the weekend on Friday. The second and final wheel-to-wheel action goes green on Saturday afternoon over the jam packed NTT IndyCar Series event weekend.
