With the target placed firmly on his back, Hyundai Veloster N TCR driver Tyler Maxson rolled into Sonoma Raceway with the momentum of five straight wins. With three more chances to stand atop the podium, the young teenager from Georgia continued his quest for a perfect season adding three more victories to go eight straight to start 2020.
“Honestly, I never expected to be on a streak like this,” explained Tyler Maxson after his third win of the weekend and eighth in as many races. “I knew we would contend, and I thought we could battle for podiums and wins throughout the season, but to have eight straight wins is something that I would have never imagined.”
“Tyler is proving that he is something special,” added Copeland Motorsports Team owner. “Whether the car is perfect, or we have some issues, Tyler pushes the car to the limit gaining the maximum each and every lap. We are all motivated to keep doing what we are doing.”
Forced to start from the tail of the field for race one after a technical issue post qualifying, Maxson drove through the field on his way to his sixth win of the season. Methodically working his way through the TCA and TC cars, Maxson pushed his Copeland Motorsports prepared Hyundai Veloster N TCR to the limit to get to the front. Scoring the fastest lap of the race, Maxson topped the podium and with the quickest lap, secured the pole position for the following day.
With one win already on the weekend, Maxson was back in his familiar position on the inside of the front row. Determined to keep his streak alive, the #74 entry shot out to the lead and never looked back. With a flag-to-flag victory, Maxson again was the fastest driver of the race as he took the checkered flag by a healthy margin.
Sunday would prove to be no different for the 2019 TCA champion. Rocketing away from the field early to open a gap, Maxson settled into a comfortable pace that kept the rest of his competitors at bay. Turning his fastest lap of the race early in the thirty-five-minute wheel-to-wheel session, the streak continued as another win made it eight straight and a perfect season to date for Tyler Maxson.
Maxson continued, “Thank you to Copeland Motorsports, Hyundai and all of my partners for the help and support this season. Every victory makes me hungrier for the next one so I can’t wait to see if we can continue this run at the next set of races.”
With the season now at the halfway point, Tyler Maxson holds the championship point lead by ninety-five markers over his next closest rival. With the next event at Road America, Maxson will have three more opportunities to race for the win over the August 28-30 weekend at the picturesque Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin facility.
Tyler Maxson would like to thank Copeland Motorsports, Bryan Herta Autosport, Hyundai, HRX USA and Four Seasons Auto Wash for all of their help, support and hard work throughout the 2020 season.
