With the start of the 2020 Superkarts! USA (SKUSA) Pro Tour this coming weekend, Tony Kart team DCT SpeedSport claimed one win and two podiums this past weekend at NOLA Motorsports Park. Taking on the Texas Sprint Racing Series, Mateo Rubio-Luengo claimed one race win and two podiums as he prepared for the upcoming national level event.
“It was a good weekend for Mateo,” explained Doug Evans. “He was up to speed early and was able to keep great pace throughout the weekend. There were some big-name drivers there testing for the start of the Pro Tour, so I feel our pace was good. It will be a challenge to repeat those results this weekend but that is our goal as we hit the track Thursday.”
Competing in both the KA100 Junior and X30 Junior classes, DCT SpeedSport driver Rubio-Luengo was one of the drivers to beat. Fighting for a podium result in KA100, the young pilot made a brilliant overtaking maneuver late in the race to take the win. Battling hard in the X30 Junior category, the Tony Kart driver was once again at the pointy end of the field and secured a third-place podium result, his second trip to the podium blocks on the weekend.
Evans continued, “I was very proud of Mateo and how he drove, especially in the KA100 Junior division. We made a conscious decision after qualifying on the pole position and finishing second in heat one to switch engines and take a ten-position grid penalty for both heats two and three. Starting 11th, Mateo drove up through the field all while he worked on his passing and race craft to finish third in both heats. That hard work paid off in the form of confidence as in the main event he was able to make a last lap pass in turn four to get past two drivers and secure the victory.”
With little downtime between the Texas Sprint Racing Series event and the start of the SKUSA Pro Tour this weekend, DCT SpeedSport and Mateo Rubio Luengo will hit the track Thursday for unofficial practice. With more test sessions on Friday, two separate wheel-to-wheel race days will make up the opening round of the national campaign as drivers look to fight for the top step of the podium and kick their 2020 SKUSA Pro Tour off right.
DCT SpeedSport would like to send an extra special thank you to BBS Engine Development for their continued help and unparalleled support. Always willing to go the extra mile to find just a little bit more, BBS deserves credit for this win just as much as DCT and Mateo.
