As the 2023 INDY NXT by Firestone season begins to wind down, Danial Frost and the series completed the final street course race this past weekend in Nashville, Tennessee at the Music City Grand Prix. Round nine of the 14-race season, Danial Frost entered the weekend with one previous win this season after winning the opening round on the Streets of St. Petersburg. With success on street courses, Frost entered the weekend with the goal of claiming another win.
After finishing the first practice session in the 17th position on Friday due to a brake issue, Danial and his HMD Motorsports with Dale Coyne Racing team went to work to find additional speed. In the second practice the next morning, Danial improved by nine positions and finished in eighth. Ready to take on qualifying later Saturday, the session was ultimately rained out and the grid for the INDY NXT by Firestone Music City Grand Prix was set by entrant points, lining Frost up in sixth.
At the start of the race, while other drivers battled for position all around him, Danial was able to maintain his sixth-place position for the opening half of the 35-lap race. By lap 22, Danial had briefly fallen back to eighth, before working his way back up to seventh and beginning to battle for sixth. With seven laps remaining, another driver dove to the inside of Frost late into the corner of turn four, as the two drivers collided, bringing out a caution and forcing the #68 Denjet machine to retire from the race.
Putting an unsuccessful weekend behind him, Danial and HMD Motorsports will now quickly turn their focus to round ten of the championship as they head to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a one-day event on Friday. Eager to return to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Frost earned his first INDY NXT by Firestone win on the circuit last season with HMD Motorsports.
With practice, qualifying, an autograph session and the race all taking place over the course of just seven hours, Frost will need to get up to speed quickly and focus on each and every session.
