Remaining a frontrunner in the opening two rounds of the 2023 INDY NXT by Firestone season, Danial Frost found himself mid-pack throughout the past weekend in the INDY NXT by Firestone Grand Prix at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. A rarity since the start of the season, Danial and his HMD Motorsports team struggled to find pace over the course of the two-day weekend.
In the one and only practice session, Danial finished the session in eighth and, with minimal time to find areas of improvement, he finished the qualifying session later that day in 12th after being unable to find clear track space in the short amount of time provided.
On Saturday, Danial battled for position in the opening few laps, racing side-by-side with a trio of drivers. Ultimately, Danial was able to move up to 11th on lap six after setting his fastest lap of the race. As the field began to spread out, Danial held his position for the remaining 29 laps, finishing just outside the top-ten.
While not the results Danial was hoping for this past weekend, the driver of the #68 DenJet entry was able to maintain his position in the INDY NXT by Firestone Championship and sits in third behind his HMD Motorsports teammates Christian Rasmussen and Nolan Siegel. Still early in the season, Danial has 11 additional races to make up points and battle his way up to the championship.
“Definitely not the weekend we had hoped for,” explained Danial. “We need to be better and will be in Detroit. Looking forward to finding my way back to the top step of the podium.”
With a three-week break on the calendar, Danial will have time to refocus before the series heads to the newly created street circuit in the streets of downtown Detroit. As a double-header weekend, getting up to speed quickly will be imperative to stay in the championship fight.
