As INDY NXT by Firestone returned to Road America this past weekend for Round 6 of the Championship, Danial Frost made quick work getting up to speed on the newly repaved four-mile circuit. Laying down fresh rubber, INDY NXT by Firestone speeds climbed throughout the weekend. Entering the weekend fourth in the Championship with one win so far this season, Frost was counting on another strong weekend as he continued his fight for the Championship.
With two practices to start the weekend, Frost made his mark finishing third in both sessions and improving his lap time by nearly two seconds. In qualifying, however, Danial qualified his #68 DenJet branded car in eighth as traffic and red flags played a major role in a mixed-up results sheet. Knowing he had to work his way back through the field, Danial was determined for a better result in Sunday’s race.
At the start of the race, Danial fell back through the field into 11th, but once the chaos of the start died down, he began picking up positions as he moved his way forward and up into ninth by lap four. On a four-mile circuit, it is easy for the cars to spread out. In the INDY NXT field, however, tight battles remained throughout the field for the entirety of the race. Throughout the entire second half of the 20-lap race, Danial went head-to-head against five other drivers as they all continually swapped positions working hard to earn as many points as possible in the Championship. As the checkered flag waved, Danial crossed the finish line in seventh.
Though Frost fell back into fifth in the Championship, he is still right in the mix as only ten points separate him from fourth. With eight rounds remaining in the 2023 season, there are still plenty of points up for grabs as Danial continues in his Championship fight.
As the season continues to ramp up, the field of INDY NXT drivers will head to World Wide Technology Raceway on Wednesday of this week for a full field test day on the oval before making their way to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in two weeks’ time for Round 8 of the season.
