The Cahan Racing Team continued to showcase their strength in the F1600 championship this past weekend at Watkins Glen International, with brothers Ayrton and Gabriel Cahan each claiming a race victory in the highly competitive Formula Race Promotions paddock.
The weekend began on a strong note during Saturday’s qualifying session, with Ayrton securing a front-row start in second and Gabriel locking in a solid fifth-place grid position. Race one saw Ayrton make a bold move early on to take the lead and hold it to the checkered flag, earning his third win of the season. Gabriel followed closely behind, crossing the line in fourth after an intense front-field battle.
Race two flipped the script. Gabriel capitalized on his experience and made calculated passes throughout the race to take the top spot and bring home his second victory of the season, with Ayrton just missing the podium in fourth.
The final race of the weekend brought a tough test for the brothers. Heading into the final corners, in second and third position, both drivers were caught up in an incident, not of their own making, and finished outside of the top ten in 17th and 18th. Despite their best efforts, this was a rare dip in an otherwise impressive season for the sibling duo.
“I was grateful to have my car back and race at The Glen,” expressed Ayrton. “After working out some kinks, I took the win in Race 1, with fastest lap in Race 2 to start Race 3 at the front. It was a fantastic race, with a very unfortunate ending. We will persevere and redeem ourselves in New Jersey! Looking forward to getting back on track.”
Gabriel Cahan added, “Watkins Glen started off strong. We were at the top of the charts all day Friday and secured a P4 finish in Race 1. Sunday kicked off with a win, but unfortunately, Race 3 ended with Ayrton and me getting collected when someone went into a wall. That hurt our championship points and left me with a mild concussion. Despite the setback, it was an awesome weekend overall. Racing at such a historic track and picking up my fifth win of the season made it one to remember.”
The Cahan Racing Team will now regroup and shift their focus to the next round of the season, taking place at New Jersey Motorsports Park, August 1-3. With both brothers still holding top positions in the championship standings, the battle for supremacy, both in the paddock and within the Cahan garage, is far from over.
