It was a debut for Jay Howard Driver Development driver Al Morey in both the USF2000 Championship Presented by Cooper Tires and on the Streets of St. Petersburg this past weekend. Making the move from the F4 program to the talent-filled USF2000 grid, Morey completed his first weekend in the series with 15th and tenth place results in both feature races after improving from his starting positions in each race leaving St. Petersburg with some momentum.

“It was a great weekend and an opportunity to learn a lot for me,” expressed Morey. “This was my first time to St. Pete and my first ever street race so to leave the weekend with two race finishes and one in the top-ten, I could not be happier.”

With a single practice session to try and learn the track and get up to speed, Morey went straight into qualifying for race one which saw him clock the 16th fastest lap of the session. Lining up for the race on Saturday afternoon from the outside of row eight, Morey kept his nose clean gaining a position in the caution-filled race to finish 15th after being held back behind a wreck on lap one.

Returning to the track Sunday for the final wheel-to-wheel action of the weekend, Morey would see action early in the morning as spectators for the NTT INDYCAR Series began to line the fences. Starting 17th for race two, the Fortville, Indiana resident was able to climb seven positions and cross the line tenth, his first top-ten of the weekend and the series in his debut weekend.

Morey added, “I found that St. Pete was one of the most, if not the most, difficult track I’ve ever raced on. I now know what to expect in USF2000 competition and will be even more ready for Sebring in a few weeks’ time.”

Leaving St. Pete 11th in the USF2000 Presented by Cooper Tires championship standings, Morey will now shift his focus to the next event at the Sebring International Raceway over the March 23-26 weekend. Testing at the bumpy central Florida facility on several occasions in the offseason, Morey is ready to attack and improve on his St. Petersburg results.

“I am really looking forward to Sebring,” continued Morey. “I feel that with all of the practice we’ve had there, I will be very competitive. I’d also like to formally welcome my first three sponsors, Indy Boat Co., Raffurty’s Bar and Grill, and Reis-Nichols, and thank them for their ongoing support.”
