Earning his first victory of the season at the first Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup Presented by BF Goodrich event of 2022, Copeland Motorsports Tyler Gonzalez is looking for more in South Florida. Taking on the Streets of St. Petersburg for the second event weekend of the series, Gonzalez will compete in his second home state event in as many races as he looks to find his way back to the top step of the podium.
“We started off the season well with a win, but unfortunately some contact in race two put us down the order,” explained Gonzalez. “The goal is simple this coming weekend. We want to win and podium in both races and bring ourselves back into championship contention.”
With fourteen races on the 2022 calendar and only two complete, Gonzalez sits eighth in the series points battle with the bulk of his 440 total points (350) coming from race one in Daytona. With 31 cars entered for the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, anything is possible.
Gonzalez added, “Consistency wins championships and obviously the points total between race one and two was not ideal. I know we have the team to beat, and I have the car that can win, and we proved this in Daytona. I have experience at St. Pete and will put that to good use as we hunt for a maximum point weekend.”
