Reigning TCA Champion Tyler Maxson is set to make is TCR debut this coming weekend at the famed Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. Competing with the Copeland Motorsports program, the same team that assisted him to multiple race wins and the title in 2019, Maxson will pilot a Hyundai Veloster N TCR in his quest to earn back-to-back championships in two separate categories. A quick turnaround will see the Georgia resident travel to Florida for his street course debut at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg alongside the NTT IndyCar Series.
“I am anxious and excited to get the season started,” explained Tyler Maxson. “We have had some good tests and learned a lot with the car. I feel very confident and feel like things have gone very positively in the off season. It is a new year and a new season so I will approach it one race at a time, but the ultimate goal is race wins and the championship.”
Competing at COTA during a SCCA Supertour event a few weeks ago, Maxson earned a victory in the GTX class aboard his Veloster N. Experiencing all types of weather conditions, the young talent showed impressive pace in wet weather conditions and should be a major threat in 2020.
“We won more than half the races we entered in the TCR class in 2019 with Mason Filippi, and Tyler is on pace with his data each and every outing,” explained Dean Copeland, Owner of Copeland Motorsports. “I am confident that he will surprise a few people this year. I guess we will have to wait and see.”
Taking part in a Promoters Test Day on Thursday, official practice will take place on Friday before qualifying and race one on Saturday. The second of two wheel-to-wheel events will go green on Sunday before the team packs up and heads to Florida. Tyler Maxson would like to thank Copeland Motorsports, Bryan Herta Autosport, Hyundai, HRX USA and Four Seasons Auto Wash for all of their help, support and hard work throughout the 2019 season and onwards into 2020.
